It dissolves in water to form a deep purple-red solution. It can be oxidized and decomposed in ethanol and hydrogen peroxide.
Potassium permanganate is one of the strongest oxidizing agents. As an oxidizing agent, it is greatly affected by pH. Its oxidizing ability is the strongest in acidic solutions. In acidic media, it is reduced to Mn2+, and in alkaline or neutral media, it is reduced to manganese dioxide. It reacts with Mn2+ to form manganese dioxide, and oxygen is released during the reaction process. Its corresponding acid, permanganic acid (HMnO4), and anhydride (Mn2O7), are both strong oxidizing agents that can spontaneously decompose and generate heat. Contact with organic matter can cause combustion. It is prone to explosion when in contact with concentrated sulfuric acid. Under cooling conditions, it reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid to produce black-green oily liquid permanganic anhydride.
